Lady Godiva Rides Again - This could be you!

"Hyde Park braces itself for naked charity ride featuring 50 women
ACCORDING to legend, Lady Godiva stripped off and rode naked through the streets of Coventry to protest against her husband’s punitive taxes and heavy-handed treatment of his tenants.
Almost 1,000 years later, the spirit of the racy folk hero is being summoned again and 50 women are being asked to leave their inhibitions at the gates of Hyde Park and bare all on horseback.
The advert reads: “50 Lady Godivas Needed (with horses and transport) to ride naked through Hyde Park.”
Why you might ask? Inequality in the work place? A novel alternative to London’s creaking transport system? No. It’s all in the name of raising money for charity… and it just so happens to coincide with the launch of the Brit flick Godiva on DVD. Writer-director Vicky Dewson, 22, says the response has been good.
She said: “All the riders are raising money for the Maggie’s Centre in Oxford and we’ve had lots of interest. I’m on the board there and it seemed like a good way to plug the film while doing something worthwhile.
Maggie’s Centres are places that anyone affected by cancer can turn to for support. I just hope we raise a lot more than a Godiva [fiver].”
On May 19 those riders that have not succumbed to prudishness and have managed to evade the flesh police will trot around Hyde Park before lining up for a photo to be used in an advert for the charity.
The procession will be led by Vicky’s sister Libby, who plays Penny in the films. Although Libby doesn’t get naked in the film, she flaunted all at the premiere in January. The sisters haven’t quite filled their quota of riders yet.
Vicky said: “We still need a few brave ladies. Anyone can be a Godiva. We don’t discriminate. We’re just hoping no one bottles out on the day.”
The ride is at 11am on May 19 and riders should congregate between Cumberland Gate and Victoria Gate.
