Heathrow, What's next

Terminal 5 is open and the first flight landed this morning.

The British Authority had planned on fingerprinting passengers as they depart on their flights, but there is a glitch... there is concern that it will violate the data protection act. The British Airport Authority (BAA) states that it is necessary as the departure lounge will consist of both domestic and international passengers and fingerprinting will prevent a domestic passenger from exchanging their ticket with an international passenger and avoiding immigration controls. The Information Commissioner's Office wants BAA to take photographs instead and says it will be less intrusive. For now, they will be using photographs.

Terminal 1 is undergoing extensive renovation so that the Star Alliance will be under one roof. No more running from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2 to connect with your Star Alliance flights. United will be moving into Terminal 1 on the 10th of June along with Air New Zeland. The partners located in Terminal 2 will be relocating in October and November and will coincide with the closure of terminal 2. The rest of the Star Alliance with be in terminal 1 by 2012.

It will be an interesting summer as the open skies program goes into effect the 30th of March and will allow for an increase of 31% more flights between the UK and the US. Concerns are fog, delays, strikes, congestion and chaos!
