Travel Advisory for the Holidays

We took a trip to see our son in Pensacola, Florida this last weekend and our daughter in Phoenix. Just taking that trip made me realize that there may be some things that the traveling public should be aware of to make their holiday travel a bit easier and calmer.

1st and foremost: Make sure you have a photocopy of your passport in your suitcase, in an email, or somewhere that you can access easily if you lose yours. Yes, it even happens to flight attendants and frequent travelers.

1. Bring your own food
If you are traveling on a flight under 3 hours you wont be fed and if security is too long or you are running late, you wont get to eat. They don't even have peanuts or pretzels anymore. Bring an empty water bottle. Once you get through security, you can fill it with water. On the plane, you can fill it with tap water. US Airways sells little bottles of water, but ice and tap water are free. Good things to bring, dried fruit, nuts, crackers, peanut butter (small container) & plastic ware.

We had regular connections, however, flights were late getting in and running to the next flight left us no time to get any food.

If you are on a flight that provides meals and you have special needs, you can request a special meal as long as you do so 24 hours in advance. Remember, sometimes the meals wont be there. If you change flights, or catering got the information mixed up your meal may not be there. Bring things to tide you over.

2. Bring you own entertainment
Ipods, movies, headsets, magazines, books. You may get on the plane and some body's charming child stuck something in the jack, or the sound isn't working out of yours. Flight Attendants do not know what works at your seat unless someone tells them and it usually cannot be fixed prior to your flight leaving. So, if you know you cant live without entertainment, bring your own, and if you find something not working at your seat, let a flight attendant know so that the next time the plane is near a mechanic it can be repaired.

3. Bring small bills
Wines, beers and cocktails are $6.00, food is $7.00 and until every airline is on a credit card system you will have to wait while someone finds change for you or refuses to serve you because flight attendants don't have change.

4. Bring a pair of socks, pashmina, eye shades, small toothbrush, sample toothpaste, floss, emery board and your own pen. These items fit neatly in a gallon size Pleeeaase, flight attendants are not required to provide you with a pen to fill out your documentation. They only have one and usually need it for their own paperwork.

Please, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Bring your own medications and stay away from the alcohol. Arrive early enough at the beginning of your journey so that the stress that builds during the day is minimized. Don't take it out on the flight attendant. They will usually work hard to make the flight comfortable but cannot fix all the other problems that happened to you during the day. We are very glad to see you and hope you enjoy your flight.
